I can't find a thread dedicated to this country, so am starting this one.

It seems a shame to start on a negative note, but I was looking for an Ethiopia thread to mention the clampdown the Government is is undertaking in the country.

Firstly, a few weeks ago a new law came into effect which criminalises the use of VOIP software and equipment, which means people can only use the state owned telecommunications systems, which are very expensive for most people in the country.

Now there is a report from RSF that the Government is blocking access to the Tor network, taking away one of the routes for people to speak out anonymously.

It seems a shame a country where so many people are starving is using their money on suppressing freedom of speech and information.

I wonder how they're doing that... it must be like nailing jelly to the ceiling...

It is reported that for accessing "unauthorised" networks the transgressor risks eight years in prison and/or a hefty fine.

At the Battle of Adowa in 1896, roughly 70% of Italy's army perished. In fact more Italians were killed in one day than the whole of the British army. and the campaign covered more miles than Napoleon's campaign in Russia.

Most of the captives were mutilated and, reportedly, castrated. Though later ransomed most were too ashamed to go home.

Partly in revenge for such humiliation, Mussolini succeeded in conquering the country in 1936
