Hugo Chavez has a number of territorial disputes with his neighbours. Notwithstanding the dispute with Guyana where he seeks to "claim" over half the country there are other disputed tracts of land and islands.

The Isla Aves is a disputed "territory" in the Caribbean. As part of the "Bird Shit Act" the USA has extracted guano from the island. Awarded to Venezuela by the Queen of Spain, it has to import thousands of tons of soil and rock each year to keep it above the water level.

Chavez uses the oil wealth of his country to secure political support internationally.

The death of Hugo Chavez has put the state in an official period of mourning. The question of where Venezuela goes from now is starting to be asked. His party is keen to hold elections for a new President as soon as possible, to continue "his legacy".

Echoing a previous age in the Soviet Union, it has been decided that Venezuela's recently deceased President Chavez is to be embalmed and placed on permenant public view at a military museum.

The personality cult of the late Hugo Chavez is dominating the forthcoming elections. Sadly civil unrest is starting to affect the run up to voting. In US dominated news feeds it is difficult to research material which is not subjective.

Civil unrest in Venezuela has followed the Presidential election. The ability to hold a recount is not apparently possible under the country's electoral system.
