How come I find myself yawning when I either see someone else yawning or reading about it?

Seems you're more likely to catch it from family and close friends than strangers. Personally I can start just by thinking about it.

I can start just by reading about it- and now typing about it...

I'm reminded of the "Yawning Song" in the film - Tom Thumb. Altogether now....

"I'm the Yawning man...."

Off for a lie down now.

Watch a family around a yawning labrador. Amusing.

I read somewhere that dogs often mimic their owners (not by driving cars, reading the news or doing stand up comedy usually) by copying some of their habits. I always yawn a lot regardless of whether I've slept a lot or not. Our old dog would yawn constantly all day every day and often look at us afterwards as if asking if she'd done it right!

Part of the Wiki article linked to above confirms what I was told many years ago about the contagious aspect of yawning.
If, indeed, I yawn because I feel that I am short of oxygen, those around me will subconciously think that there may be a general lack of the stuff around them, and promptly join in.
Our night shifts can be hilarious, as a single yawn does its tour round the team.
