I think all the lines anyone draws are artificial and more than a little hypocritical. I eat animals, that's it. No 'they must have been hugged before being slaughtered' or anything of that ilk.

No-one's saying thay should be hugged before being slaughted, we'd just like to be sure that they'd been tret reasonably wel, + hadn't been forced to suffer pain + distress.

Comfortable with saying that where your line is is where it should be for all, and that people who have no qualms about foie gras can just lump it?

No, which is partly why I haven't promoted the banning of foie gras (the other part being that I don't feel strongly enough about the issue).

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as 1st July is now past.

I personally don't like the thought of the mass produced foie gras because of the treatment of animals, and it's sad that this gavage method is considered as a gastronomic delicacy. There are alternative, more natural methods of achieving what gastronomes often sneerily call "fatty goose liver" as opposed to foie gras, and I have no problem with these alternative methods.

Despite not having very strong feelings on the matter, I was watching this report on Sky News, and some of the people being interviewed made me think of the scenes at Milliways, there was something rather disturbing about their attitudes :)

I am not a vegetarian*, but I don't eat foie gras anymore due to the way it is produced. And it is delicious. I would eat foie gras every day if it could be made without force-feeding or commensurate levels of mistreatment of animals. Not that strange pate stuff that takes away all the texture, but the true foie gras that melts away in your mouth. Boy am I making an argument for not eating it. But after researching it, I can't.

*Though everyone seems to automatically assume that I am.

I've never eaten foie. And certainly not gras. Always known how the gras variety was produced and steered clear of it.

It's hypocritical because it's presented as caring about the animals' welfare where what it really is is salving one's own conscience. If people truly cared about the animal they would eschew meat and other animal by-products not just give it a back rub before shooting a steel bolt into its brain.

I don't think I ever said that I truly cared about an animal, just that I don't want it to unduly suffer so that I can eat it. The amount of suffering that I personally think is okay is going to be different from everyone else's, and it is pretty arbitrary, based purely on my knowledge and experiences.

Arguing for arguments sake,

What is your knowledge and, more importantly, experience of animals being slaughtered?
