Godel, Escher and Bach: The Eternal Braid: Hofstader - For me it was the final (layman's) proof that nothing "ought" to join up... but never waded to the bitter end.

Also enjoyed "Sarum" Edward Rutherfurd.

I liked Sarum, too, and highly recommend Gödel, Escher, Bach

A couple of other popular science books I'm fond of:

Phantoms in the Brain - a fascinating book on neuroscience by the rather awesome V. S. Ramachandran

How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker
Not attempting to be a comprehensive or balanced treatment of the subject, and not all of Steven Pinker's theories sound entirely convincing to me, but it's a compellingly written, intelligent, compassionate and quite humorous book.

Note to self - gotta track that down...

Saram is great at suggesting some kind of continuity over the generations...

Have you read The Forest, also by Rutherfurd.

I read both The Forest and Sarum - I find him readable but strangely irritating in that it skims over such a long period.

Yes, but I agree with Jenny that it would be better if he didn't skim so much.

I read "Lord of the Flies". I couldn't understand why Gandalf didn't just hop on an eagle and drop the fly into Mount Doom and save us all that faffing about.

Because for the fourth age to belong to mortals, as it must with the passing of the rings of power, mortals must control their own destiny. That's why Ralph and Piggy have to sneak past The Beast to get their flies undone.

Or something like that.

I feel I must point out that the Buddha achieved enlightenment not by reading books but by sitting under a banyan tree.

I bet he was bored and wished he had a book.

Just had a thought: would anyone care to suggest a booklist for some famous person? Not more than ten books, I suggest, and the person can be real or fictional.
I'll open with Jesus of Nazareth;
1 The Talmud

Next, Benjamin Disraeli (who said, "If I want a good book, I write it")
10 books by Benjamin Disraeli

Good idea, but you better start a new thread for that, mckeonj.
