Well, don't kill any people. It's OK to kill bacteria.

Can we have some consensus, please?

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember its a sin to kill a mockingbird.

While I would recommend Pratchett for some light chuckling, I certainly would not consider his work a path to enlightenment.

Small Gods is both funny and philosophical.

Yeah, there's a fair bit of philosophy + science in the Discworld series. Also quite a lot of social satire in the newer ones.

Small Gods is one of my favourite Discworld books.

Good Omens by Pratchett and Neil Gaiman gives some food for thought.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a note - although it could get quite long!

I included the Pratchett books because I have heard a couple of people mentioning them in a ''you'd be surprised how deep they are'' kind of way. Only one way to find out.

Godel, Escher and Bach: The Eternal Braid: Hofstader - For me it was the final (layman's) proof that nothing "ought" to join up... but never waded to the bitter end.

Also enjoyed "Sarum" Edward Rutherfurd.

I liked Sarum, too, and highly recommend Gödel, Escher, Bach

A couple of other popular science books I'm fond of:

Phantoms in the Brain - a fascinating book on neuroscience by the rather awesome V. S. Ramachandran

How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker
Not attempting to be a comprehensive or balanced treatment of the subject, and not all of Steven Pinker's theories sound entirely convincing to me, but it's a compellingly written, intelligent, compassionate and quite humorous book.
