| Well, don't kill any people. It's OK to kill bacteria. |

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember its a sin to kill a mockingbird. |

Small Gods is both funny and philosophical. |

| Yeah, there's a fair bit of philosophy + science in the Discworld series. Also quite a lot of social satire in the newer ones. |

| Good Omens by Pratchett and Neil Gaiman gives some food for thought. |

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a note - although it could get quite long!
I included the Pratchett books because I have heard a couple of people mentioning them in a ''you'd be surprised how deep they are'' kind of way. Only one way to find out. |

Also enjoyed "Sarum" Edward Rutherfurd. |
I liked Sarum, too, and highly recommend Gödel, Escher, Bach
A couple of other popular science books I'm fond of:
Phantoms in the Brain - a fascinating book on neuroscience by the rather awesome V. S. Ramachandran
How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker
Not attempting to be a comprehensive or balanced treatment of the subject, and not all of Steven Pinker's theories sound entirely convincing to me, but it's a compellingly written, intelligent, compassionate and quite humorous book. |
