I've had Trend micro on my PC since the beginning and never had a problem. Will look into further options tomorrow.

TBH I don't think it really matter which AV software you use, they all have their vulnerabilities, it is more about being aware of the risks and being careful about what things are clicked.

Noscript is a very good add-on for Firefox that stops nearly everything from doing nasty things, but you have to allow some if you want to do anything slightly fancy on a website. A must if you are searching though sites you don't trust yet.

I run Norton 360 on my laptop and my netbook, but they certainly do slow things down. My main computer is an Apple, and so far has needed no AV software - long may this happy state of affairs continue.

Jenny, just a head's up - there is indeed a very nasty Apple virus out there... Apple is working quickly with anti-virus developers to try and shut it down. Might want to have a look at this:

Apple's days of immunity due to their relatively small numbers are over. They're a target now.

Apple have already released a security patch to deal with the Flashback virus, I believe - at any rate, we've had some updates recently.

I was told that at least part of the relative freedom of Apple computers from viruses is to do with the Linux-based OS.

Another view - http://blog.itsecurityexpert.co.uk/2010/04/does-apple-mac-need-anti-virus_19.html

Actually FreeBSD rather than Linux, even 'nixes are having their virus challenges these days. Virus writers will only bother if they perceive a possible gain, financial or otherwise, the increasing numbers of Macs out there is a greater potential for gain therefore they will be a target.

Thank you so much for your help everyone, it's very appreciated. So the options seem to be a systems restore or a factory reset after transferring things over to an external drive?

1. If she were to do a systems restore, what does it do to the computer? how far back should she do one? and how do you actually do one?

2. If she were to take the option of transferring the files to an external drive, what will that transfer over? Will that transfer the virus too? And what does that do to the computer with regards to software etc?

Sorry for all the questions... I know nothing about this sort of stuff. :(

1 system restore i thought did not work for this if it does let me know

2 transfer what you want to keep

rebuild the pc

install your av

run it then transfer files back

What is the educated opinion on Norton 360 which I'm currently running? Would Microsoft Security Essentials suffice instead?

My biased opinion of Norton products is that they are the work of the devil! Intrusive and resource hogs and I don't let them anywhere near my machines. I wouldn't tell someone to give up a paid for AV solution for a free one however. So I'm not really being much help!

Ok, somehow I managed to get the computer to do a system restore; I was able to download Malwarebytes from when I tried to load it the other day, and MSE's has been downloaded and is waiting to go after Malwarebytes has finished.

It's 10 minutes in a full scan and so far nothing has been found. Should I be worried?

Somehow, I managed to totally fumble my way into fixing it. XD

I'd had trouble shutting down the computer (probably from turning it on and off so many times!!!), so the laptop actually diverted to a system restore fairly much by itself (I think XD). So after it came back on again, the downloads of Malwarebytes and MSE automatically started which gave me hope that the system restore had bypassed TS, I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes just to be safe, then ran a couple of scans of MSE.

The computer is now working!

Talk about your epic luck.

Thank you everyone for your help... I still can't manage to get safe mode working, but that's for another day!! In future, I'll know to do a system restore if something like this pops up again but now I have Malwarebytes and MSE in place, hopefully not.

One very happy daughter who has her laptop back, and one very happy mum who has fixed it.

Oh good! It's amazing what you can accomplish by just playing about with something (though that's what got you into trouble in the first place...)
