I had a confusing conversation once with a chap from Newcastle. He was asking me for a bowl and I thought he was asking me for a ball. Or the other way round.

Can't remember. We were both working in an OT unit for people with learning disabilities.

The fiancÚ once told me about how he was at a chip shop when he was a boy. The Chinese bloke at the shop asked the fiancÚ if he had a sore finger (or so he thought). The fiancÚ kept telling him that he was all right and didn't have a sore fonger. And then the bloke brought him some salt and vinegar.

That was a standard joke in the 70s, "how come they always ask you about injuries and then swear at you in the Chinese take away?" "Sore finger? Effing else?"

I think it originated on the "Comedians" tv show. This link will give you a flavour of it, some of it does indeed taste bad!

I always thought mayonnaise on french fries originated with the British, but my husband tells me it's the Dutch. Either way I've become much more fond of it than the ketchup (tomato sauce) that is popular in North America. Especially if you mix a little chili sauce into it :) (and it's da bomb on batter fried onion bits!)

Chips an HP sauce, or the curious mix of brown sauce and vinegar that only seems to exist in chippies in the central belt of Scotland. "What ye waantin oan it?", "Salt, Soss 'n' vinegar!"

This thread is in danger of becoming a coherent series of anecdotes and discussion.
Ooh, look, a starling!
