Are we back to this old chestnut again?

Just try to imagine the consequences of returning everything that has been acquired by countries over the years, and see where that leads.

Half our Crown Jewels would have to go back, for a start.

Also, had the Elgin marbles not been taken when they did, they would now be in nowhere near as good condition.

Have you ever seen the Cairo museum? Most of the artifacts are lost or mislabelled, rotting away because nobody knows what or where they are. The only ones they can afford to preserve are the tourist-trap ones like Tut's tomb treasures.

Chances are they would be in no condition, given that the practice of burning marble statuary for lime was endemic at the time they were removed.

The Greek government hasn't exactly got money right now to spend on storing them the way they need to be stored.

I don't think anyone's suggesting returnign everything that's been acquired; just things that have been 'acquired'.
