One of my Dad's favourites was "Couldn't hit a bull's arse with a banjo", why you would want to do this is not revealed.

In my family - I believe instigated by my late grandad who I never met - people are referred to as "as stupid as sailor's shite". How exactly Opa Gustav had managed to determine the intelligence of sailor's shite and why he deemed it to be less cerebral than other types of excrement has yet to be found out.

Similar ordure related expression, "thick as shit in the neck of a bottle", why is the shit there and what makes it so thick, we need answers.

more {whatevers} than you can shake a stick at.

Why the stick shaking?

If it was an ordure clogged bottle I could understand but not a stick.

Another nugget.

"Don't teach your granny to suck eggs"

When asked how he was feeling, my Father-in-law would use a phrase that is commonly used in NZ.. "A box of Fluffys,"

This is a shortened version of feeling like a "Box of fluffy ducks".
(I must hasten to point out that New Zealanders are not in the habit of blow-drying ducks to make them all fluffy...)

So - A Box of Fluffies = Box of Fluffy Ducks = being very happy and contented with life.

In similar vein, when commenting on the parsimony of an individual they are said to be "tight as a duck's arse, and that's watertight".

"Thick as two short planks placed edgeways".

Why short planks? I've always wondered.

I have always thought that one of the more sensible ones.

Your granny is meant to be very good at all these "olde time" pastimes so she would already be an expert at sucking eggs and doesn't need any instructions.

It was rather equivalent to trying to tell someone who has been doing something for years how they should do it.

Okay I get that but why would you want to suck eggs in the first place?

I've heard it but without the "granny" bit - it seems like it's just an easy thing to do, seeing as it's a smooth, round object.

When hoping for something to be successful, my Gran used to say, "With the help of God and a few policemen."

That one has always made sense to me, tbh, given that a duck's arse indeed should be watertight...

What makes very little sense to me, au contraire, is the shared German/ Irish expression "he jabbers like a duck's arse" for someone who just can't shut up.

Egg collectors used to suck the contents of the egg out through a small hole, leaving the shell intact for their collection. Granny must have been a collector.
