I stumbled upon this site about pet rocks. I didn't know they where a thing. I have only seen one in a SpongeBob episode. lol My question is are they a thing and would you ever get one? I think I might bring some for boy scouts so the children can be entertained.

Hi peepsed,

Welcome to the QI forums.

Just to let you know, we're not massively keen on having URLs of commercial companies posted on here. Whilst they may well be interesting (after all, who doesn't love a pet rock?!), we've had too many cases of people just using these forums to try and increase the traffic to their website.

Since you're new, I'm not going to get all spam-moderator on yo' ass! But, in future, just bear that in mind.

For what it's worth, I've never seen any SpongeBob episodes, but I vaguely remember pet rocks being a thing back in the 80's.

The guy who first advertised them just died recently, I believe.

So he did.

I think I've still got mine. They're so much easier to care for than tamagotchi...

And no need for Rohypnol.

What? I can't make sense of that.

Sorry, CD. It was an obscure reference to something I'd posted as a joke response on another thread to something Posital posted.

I have a vague recollection of a character in the Nicholas Lyndhurst eighties sitcom 'The Two of Us' having a pet rock. I cannot however find anything online to back up my misty knowledge of dodgy sitcoms.

It was another rape gag. They seem to be quite the coming thing.

I rather suspected as much, but I figured I shouldn't start yelling and come across as a complete harpy. Let's stop it, though.

PDR - you of all people shouldn't don the holier-than-thou cloak.

CD - your restraint is admirable, and certainly in this case justified if you bother to read back where and in what context that Rohypnol remark was made.

I almost said something when the remark was made on the "bad taste" thread, but I figured since it was there I should leave it alone. I understand that sometimes one think of something that isn't appropriate to say then and there, and taking it in the "bad taste" thread seemed okay enough.

I don't see the need for it here, but I guess I'm more interested in it not happening again. Not joking about highly traumatising stuff shouldn't be too much to ask for, should it?

Apologies again. Happy to delete any posts anyone finds offensive. Haven't done so thus far as some forummers don't like deletions.
I decided it was 'okay' to post on the 'offensive' thread. My main concern was that it was offensive to Posital but hoped he knew me well enough by now. It's easy to forget how open this forum is.
