Does Laetiporus sulphureus growing on Taxus baccata contain any Taxane or does it break down the taxane before it sends it to the fruiting body? And is there any evidence?

I'm afraid you lost me after the 'Does'.

Welcome to QI, by the way.

MMmm something about
Does (a fungus) growing (on a tree)contain (a chemical) or does it break down (a chemical) before it sends it to the fruiting body (like the bit of a mushroom you eat ) and can this be proved?

Surely that doesn't make sense, surely if it is to break anything down it MUST contain it. Unless that CONTAIN should be RETAIN

I get the impression that PuttyStyles is lost. Or looking for help with his/her homework.

The chemical is produced by the tree, not by the fungus, so the question is (I think) does the chemical break down in the tree before it gets to where the fungus is growing, or does the fungus pick any of it up?

At least, that was my interpretation, I could be wrong. And I don't know the answer.

The two options given where does the fungus contain it or does it break it down before it reaches the fruiting body. To break it down it MUST contain it. I still think that contain should be retain.

I thought Fungus was NOT considered to be growing in the fruiting body (80% (?)of it being hidden).

This would be voluntary, because the doctrine of "De Minimis" removes any legal compulsion in fungal matters (the law does not concern itself with truffles).

I'll go out on a limb.

Yes, it contains Taxane and yes there is evidence (empirically - you could try eating them instead of chemotherapy).

Next.

(Please seek further advice from your doctor)
