The funny thing is that even though liberty bodices (and their rubber buttons, which I remember well encountering as a young child) are such a joke nowadays, they were regarded as 'liberty' because they were an advance in freedom on the corsets which girls were previously made to wear at a fairly young age.

What about "Lanthorn"

We have some lovely dialect words here in Yorks that are fading out of use. Some of my favourites are 'mithering' (whingeing) 'ginnel' (alley) + 'nithering' (cold, miserable weather.)

nithering is very much in use here, as 'I'm nithered'.

You get the opportunity to use "mithering" on a regular basis when you work with someone like Yammering Netty.

Well, that had me googling for a while. Sophism. I don't think sophistication nowadays is degoratory. At least not the way I hear it being used.
Not sure what's being got at here. Sophistication is all about superficial style, where sophistry is anything but.

The Sophists, basically, suffered from their own success and pretty much became what their detractors described - highly-paid spin-doctors.

Sophistication - superficial? I've never felt it that way.
To me, "the process or result of becoming more complex, developed, or subtle", or "knowledge through experience" sounds truer.
I didn't know the word sophistry, which apparently means generally fallacious method of reasoning.

Superficial style? as in "sophisticated technology"? Hardly. It's become a catch-all positive to indicate everything from the elegant to the advanced - whereas I'd wager that at one time it was regarded as anything but... We have moved from an ideal of simplicity to a worship of the complex, where what was once to adulterate is now to improve.

You have a point. I was thinking of the term as applied to persons rather than as in your example, where it seems to have kept a little more of its proper flavour.

It crops up in Julian Stockwin's books quite a lot.
