Way back, they used to spell "lesbian" with a capital "l". I just found this out when reading The Thin Man.

Well, that's understandable because of it being someone from Lesbos.

Also, an old word i like is pulchritudinous and the fiancÚ likes the word vestibule.

Hobbledehoy; a clumsy or awkward youth - especially those with their lowered jeans exposing bum cracks or boxers. (2012)

The perfect word for it!

How About " awful" in the sense of " magnificent"

I would like to see the rehabilitation of sophisticated back to the warm bosom of sophistry, where it presumably belongs.

Pantechnicon is sadly underused these days, though I believe in Australia it is still struggling along.

Well, that had me googling for a while. Sophism. I don't think sophistication nowadays is degoratory. At least not the way I hear it being used.

"Evening, all. I thought I'd just see what everyone was wittering on about tonight... I hope there is no inaniloquent conversations going on.

I like the comment made in the preantepenultimate post about 'Awful'. I think though that if you were to use it these days people would just accuse you of suffering from lethologica. (Still probably better than krukolibidinous...)

... as Michael Strogoff discovered, there is a way to avoid that fate.
Allow your eyes to well up at the last moment, and the evaporating tears will form a protective layer.

'Hodmandod' was a local word for 'snail'.

The rape of the lock, canto 1;

Alexander pope wrote:

The Tortoise here and Elephant unite,
Transform'd to Combs, the speckled and the white.
Here Files of Pins extend their shining Rows,
Puffs, Powders, Patches, Bibles, Billet-doux.
Now awful Beauty puts on all its Arms;
The Fair each moment rises in her Charms,

Repairs her Smiles, awakens ev'ry Grace,
And calls forth all the Wonders of her Face;
Sees by Degrees a purer Blush arise,
And keener Lightnings quicken in her Eyes.
The busy Sylphs surround their darling Care;
These set the Head, and those divide the Hair,
Some fold the Sleeve, while others plait the Gown;
And Betty's prais'd for Labours not her own.

I'm the only person I know who regularly uses the words 'amongst' + 'whilst'. I just think they sound nice.

Well, I use them, too - so that makes two.
I use idiosynchrasies, as well.

I know I use 'whilst' quite often but I don't recall having used 'amongst' recently.
