The most populous Muslim country in the World Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands.

The country has a population estimated at 232 million (UN, 2010) and is spread over an area of 1.9 million sq km. It is a very ethnically diverse country with 300 regional languages. The official language spoken is a standardised form of the Riau dialect of the Malay language.

The capital is Jakarta (formerly Dutch Batavia) which has a population of 9,850,000. The currency is the Indonesian Rupiah.

The effective separation of modern day Malaysia from Indonesia was finalised by the Anglo-Dutch Treaty signed on 23rd March 1824. This divided the British sphere of influence which evolved around Singapore in the west from a Dutch sphere of influence in the east centred on Batavia. This was designed to resolve colonial trading conflicts.

The Dutch swapped their settlement of Malacca on the Malay Peninsula for the British colony of Bencoolen on the island of Sumatra as part of the Treaty.

A lot of people are surprised to learn this fact. Many believe the stereotyped misconception that all East Asians are Zen-practicing, meditating Buddhists. Rather, Indonesia is home to around 207 million Muslims, more than the entire population of the next most populous Muslim country (Pakistan, population 182 million), and 12% of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims.
Despite its prevalence in the Middle East, Islam seems more common in Asia, with Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh (none of which are within the Arab world or have Arabic as a main language) collectively having over double the Muslim population of the entire Middle East-North Africa region.

Long forgotten by many people is the influence of the Mongols over the religions of Asia. Many elite Mongols either employed Muslim advisers, or turned to Islam, it was a natural choice given the trade route to the West and the incredible literature compiled by Muslim writers and scientists at the time. It's a shame that the enlightened nature of Islam at that time is completely opposite to the view of Islam many adherents have today.

Tradition holds that it was traders from Gujarat in India who brought Islam to the East Indies by during the eleventh century.

Oh, I wasn't talking about when Islam was introduced to the region (though I expect it to be much earlier than 11th centrury), what I meant was that the influence of Islam in some areas took hold under the Mongols because the people would follow their leaders.

But Gujarat is traditionally the stronghold of the Parsee, no? Hm... Bit strange, that...

A town which was stoned out of its mind? Apparently this happened to the good people of Palmerah west of the capital Jakarta, when the police decided to burn 3.3 tons of marijuana. They also destroyed 1.8 kilos of crystal meth and over 2,000 ecstasy pills.
