Despite having tall modern buildings (including the tallest in the world, the Burj Khalifa), Dubai has no proper sewer infrastructure and only one 30 year-old sewage treatment plant. Accordingly, the sewage is all pumped into large trucks to be shipped out of town to the treatment plant, where the trucks wait in long queues, often for many hours, to unload. Only sometimes the drivers get tired of waiting and unload their unsanitary cargoes into storm drains that unload into tourist beaches.

Shocking camel race cheats

This story appeared in the Standard earlier this year.

"Two men have been arrested in Dubai for selling robot jockeys that give camels electric shocks to make them run faster in races. In the United Arab Emirates, racing camels are ridden by robots because boy riders are banned. "Shock jockeys" can cost 30 times more than normal ones."
