Just seen on QI that the mute swan is the worlds heaviest flying bird. however no site i visited confirms this , instead claiming that certain bustards are by far the heaviest. anybody know which is right?

The heaviest mute swan, a single bird, may have been the heaviest bird. Were it swans, or was it a swan? At least your subject line isn't "mute swans"...

According to wikipedia and apparently "The Guinness Book of Animal Facts and Feats" (which I don't have to check) the Mute swan seems to be correct, with a particularly heavy one weighing 23 kg. Although a more normal weight is 15-16 kg.

According to this page it is the Kori Bustard, but the heaviest individuals reported are unconfirmed.

The average weights for (the males of) the two species are reported as 12 kg for the Swan and about 13.5 kg for the Bustard, so it is a close call.

Speaking of the mute swan, it is also the national bird of Denmark.

Following annebn's post: the male Kori Bustard of Africa would appear to average a weight of 11 -16kg tipping the scales in excess of the Mute Swan. Unconfirmed reports of bustards 23kg up to 33kg+ have been received. It is incorrect to state, as QI did that the Mute Swan is heaviest, as the Kori Bustard seems to have won the race by a short beak.

Yes, assuming the other numbers are correct that is. If I'm right mr. Fry said swanS (plural, in general), i.e. the mute swan instead of a record breaking swan.

Our source was the Encyclopedia Britannica which says:

[The trumpeter swan] is the largest swan—about 1.7 metres (5.5 feet) long, with a 3-metre (10-foot) wingspan—but it weighs less than the mute swan, which at 23 kg (50 pounds) is the heaviest flying bird.
