Today's 'FotD' lists pumas and cougars among the species of felines. They are, of course, two names for the same species.

Puma is the genus, though - not the species.

So while all Cougars are Pumas, not all Pumas are Cougars.

If puma is intended to mean the genus it should be written in italics with a capital 'P', Puma.

So, if all cougars are pumas, but not all pumas are cougars, would it not have been better to have referred to the "cougar woman" type as a "puma woman"?

Why did "cougar" get chosen over "puma"?

Because 'cougar' is the name commonly used for Puma concolor in the USA, which is where the reference to a demanding lady of a certain age originated (AFAIK)?

Works for me. Said femme-type is referred to in Finnish as puuma, or puumanainen.

On 2nd March 2011, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service declared the Eastern Cougar (Felis concolor couguar) officially extinct

I hadn't heard that. My spousal unit will want to hear. Thanks tcrisp.

It also means the US Fish and Wildlife Service don't acknowledge the genus Puma as they place the 'Eastern Cougar' in Felis .

@ sjbodell
Perhaps there's Government aid available if you're helping to preserve the Eastern Cougar. If you have one of the handful of domesticated ones I think there's money to be made..
It's worth asking...

Where as women who are regulary uncomplimentary are known as "Cats", so I would imagine that they would be domesticated cats, and as such could never, ever discover a desire for young men.

Its either cougar or cat!

I'm sorry, I'll get my coat .
