Capital Luxembourg City

Population 511,840 (2011)

Three languages are recognised as official in Luxembourg: French, German, and Luxembourgish.

The people of Luxembourg are called Luxembourgers.

From 1815 -1830 part of the United Netherlands (hence Flag)

From 1830 -1839 a province of the new Belgium state but the King of the Netherlands, still had suzerainty until 1890.

From 1839 part remained in Belgium (French speaking) but the Treaty of London 1839 recognised the independence of what is now the Grand Duchy (German speaking). Much political chess with Belgium, France and Prussia attempting to annex the territory, for example the King of the Netherlands tried to sell the territory to France!

In 1867 a second treaty also in London finally established Luxembourg as a neutral state. The massive defensive walls of the fortress of Luxembourg were neutralised (part demolished)

Something I didn't know before today but have just learned from - apparently many of the programmes and adverts on Radio Luxembourg were actually recorded in London.

I do remember the adverts for Horace Batchelor and his Infra-Draw method for doing the football pools (do those still exist?) and of course the spelling of Keynsham.

I visited friends at Radio Luxembourg in the mid-sixties. They gave me a bumper sticker for my car which read (excuse any spelling errors) - 'Gute Fahrt mit Radio Luxembourg'.
I loved it!

Have a good trip with Radio Luxembourg? What sort of trip were they expecting you to take?

Horace passed away in 1977. He will also be long remembered as one of the spoof band members in "The intro and the outro" by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band from the Gorilla Album.

At the time, my mind immediately gravitated towards, 'Have a good fart with Radio Luxembourg'.

Forgive me. ;)
