Unfortunately, it's a bit difficult to count the number of people whose lives were saved - or at least greatly improved - by consulting a doctor.

Suppose you had two surgeons. Sugeon A lost only 1% of his patients (as in died, not misplaced); surgeon B lost 25% of his patients. Which would you assume is the better surgeon?

Probably surgeon B. Surgeon A is given relatively minor non life threatening operations whilst surgeon B, because he is the better surgeon, is given more difficult, potentially life threatening cases.

If the doctors are all on strike, there is nobody available to pronounce the deceased dead so they are still legally alive until the strike is over.

No, I don't believe that either but I thought I'd suggest that way of looking at it.
