TV Tropes calls this type of character 'The Ghost'.

I remember a Mrs Doods-Patterson from the Good Life as an unseen character Margot tried to avoid.

There was also Miss Mountshaft (!) who (if I remember correctly) had something to do with Margot's music society.

What about the people who you never see properly? Like Mr Wilson in Home Improvement (I think) who you just saw bits of as neighbours talked through a fence, or Nanny in Muppet Babies who was just a pair of legs.

I think Wilson in Home Improvement was called Wilson Wilson.

There is a perfectly good French term for this phenomenon;
'jamais vu' (never seen). Many will recognise this as a companion of 'deja vu' (seen before)
Joyfully, there is another french phrase for the likes of Wilson Wilson and Elizabeth Mainmaring; 'presque vu' (almost seen), which normally refers to something seen 'out of the corner of one's eye'.

The only instance where we came close to seeing Mrs Mainwaring was a huge bulbous shape poking through a bunk bed during the episode
'The Two and a Half Feathers'. The actress Parnell McGarry provided moaning sounds.

Hmmm... I've read that somewhere before.

If only I could remember where...

Howard's Mum, Big Bang Theory

Seems to be almost a cross-over of TV with Radio. Make the TV audience use their imagination a bit.

And, subsequently, Howard and Bernadette's baby.
