Q: Who played Elizabeth Mainwaring in Dad's Army?

K: No-one

A: Parnell McGarry

Although she is never seen, Elizabeth Mainwaring is heard in the episode "The Two and a Half Feathers" (Series 4, Episode 8). There is a scene in which Captain Mainwaring is in his Anderson Shelter with Elizabeth, who takes up the top bunk. Mainwaring talks to her, and all she says is "Mmmmmmmm" three times.

The role for the part is credited in the end credits to Parnell McGarry, a bit part actress who had other roles in The Likely Lads, Bedazzled and Spike Milligan's Q series.

Similarly, in an episode of Yes, Minister (all I can remember is that there's a scene where Hacker phones Sir Humphrey in the middle of the night to say he'd found the important document that had been hidden amongst a thick pile of documents in the last Red Box), we catch a glimpse of Sir Humphrey's wife trying to sleep.

More importantly... but who played her...

Now there's a good question. Does anyone know the answer?

All I've been able to discover is that episode in which Lady Appleby appears was called Big Brother, and first aired on 17 March 1980.

But she was uncredited, so none of the usual places are able to tell me who played her.

Is there a proper name for characters such as these, referenced but never actually seen or heard from? I've tried to find out in the past for pub quiz purposes and, indeed, have tried to think of 5 or 10 such examples.

I think they're just called unseen characters, aren't they?

I believe so, yes.

The first two which came to mind were Mrs Columbo* and Mrs Ventress (Heartbeat). Slightly shamefully, the third which came to mind was Godot.

* OK, so there was a spinoff in which Mrs Columbo was the main character and Columbo** himself never appeared. But that's not really canonical, and as Peter Falk himself noted, Captain Janeway (for it was she) was far too young and pretty to have been Columbo's wife.

** Another thing which is never seen or heard is Columbo's Christian name. It is often claimed to be Philip, but that "fact" was invented as a copyright trap for a trivia book and is non-official.

I will put my mind to this issue; please check the 'Meaning of Liff' thread later....

Yes, unseen characters was all I could come up with. It's a shame, given that it's such an oft-used plot device, that there's not a better term.

You could have gone with "Sheridan" after the unseen chracter in "Keeping Up Appearances" as there are a number of places in the U.S.A. called that.

I do not recall ever seeing her Bondee. I remember a Mrs Doods-Patterson from the Good Life as an unseen character Margot tried to avoid.

Reggie Perrin's mother-in-law was sort of seen but in "animate" form.

The Archers has had a host of unheard characters over the years.
