Just going back to the hand guns vs long guns thing - I was originally under the impression that the reason the ban was limited to hand guns was to allow hunting and game control to continue. But I dug into it and found that it was to avoid overturning centuries of precedent which is at the core of our legal system.

Specifically it would have run counter to the traditional yorkshire common-law right as enshrined in the legal maxim "de minimis non curat lex" which translates as "The law does not concern itself wi' t'rifles".

I'll fetch me shooting jacket...

I think thereís also the issue that itís a fair bit easier for someone to hide a handgun about their person and walk around unhindered until they intend to use it.
Someone with a rifle stuffed down their trousers is probably going to stand out in a crowd...

In my experience it's the Pils that causes the floppiness...

Seeing the fact of the day today:

Quote:
In 1999, the total number of people killed by guns in the USA was 28,874. In Britain, the figure was 207.

I can't help noticing that the number in the UK has dropped by 75% in 10 years, and while the number in the US seems to have dropped (I'm getting different numbers from different sources), it's nowhere near as dramatic.

Don't know about anyone else, I think the gun laws in the UK have definitely worked well.

Got to be careful with reported gun deaths in the USA, different sides of gun control are very selective about their numbers, the 28874 you quoted is about 50% suicide. NRA argues that as these suicides would have happened gun or no gun then they can't be counted, bollocks, the reason the success rate in young male suicides in the US is so high is because of the ready availability of guns.

As slogans go, 'guns don't kill people, people kill themselves' doesn't really have that certain zing, does it?

Well they do have a point - studies of the accuracy of US gunnery in recent wars would suggest that american males rarely hit what they are shooting at...

Well, suicide rate in the US per capita are nearly twice that in the UK, so one has to wonder if the availability of guns makes suicide easier and pushes that figure up. Would many of those gun suicides be avoided if there was no gun available?

Even if you cut the number of gun deaths in half, that still leaves a ridiculously high number.

Suicide rates in the US are, as you say nearly twice that of the UK, a closer look shows that almost all the difference comes from US males due to...
