There's a relevant Monkey Dust sketch about baby names, but the only version of it on YouTube is in Russian, for some reason.

Sir John called his device the Ajax. This was a pun on jakes, a slang term of the time for a lavatory; the same pun appears in Shakespeare.

Would that also be the origin of jakie, the Glaswegian slang word for an alcoholic?

They're both full of shit and stink of piss.

I wasn't aware of that Scottish term until just now, and it seems to be recent to have gotten into the major dictionaries.

It's in some online dictionaries though, but none of them venture an explanation of its origin. My suspicion would be that it's after a person - Jake McPish, or some such - who lived in that manner, but your suggestion is not completely impossible.

I always thought that was the derivation of "colonial" - coming from the word "colon", describing something with a thin skin that was full of shit...

Because Monkey Dust is massive amongst Russians in their early 20s. It was one of the few irreverent shows available there in the mid 2000s.

John a prostitute's customer

Some legal factoids:

In Germany prostitution is legalised and regulated. Prostitutes therefor have a legal claim to payment and can institute legal proceedings. Now there's a letter you don't want your wife to find in the letterbox.

The only other legal consequences a German John has to fear is to be fined according to the traffic regulation act for "unnecessarily driving to and fro" while expecting the goods.

In the Netherlands the minimum age for a John is 16.

I'll be back with other Johns. That biblical fella looks promising.

Must be fairly much a west coast term, as here they are parrafins (parrafin lamp > tramp) or winos alkies etc. I would have known what a Jakey was but generally wouldn't use that term

There is a character in the series "Still game" called Pete the Jakey.

From - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Still_Game_characters
Pete McCormack (better known as "Pete The Jakey") (2002 - present) - Pete the Jakey is a familiar sight to residents of Craiglang, almost the archetypal tramp., Pete also has a very active imagination. Ignored by many, he seems to have always been about; he often is seen sleeping outside Navid's. Jack and Victor can't seem to remember a time when he wasn't an alcoholic tramp. A man of many secrets, it's later revealed that he was the father of the property developer who wanted to demolish The Clansman and also that Pete may or may not work for the Government. He also may be the inventor of the famous "Beefy Bake".

Me an my big mouth.

Not only are there too many
(John the Apostle, John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, the Beloved Disciple), but also is the jury still out on whether, if any, of these are the same John and if so how many.

The easiest way to deal with this conundrum must be the Latter-day Saints stance. They're all the same person and also he's still alive and kicking (based on John 21:21–23). Supposedly he gave church founder Joseph Smith apostolic authority (bringing resurrected James and Peter along as back-up).

Other theologians see in John (the Apostle) a romantic, if not sexual, partner of Jesus.
