Good Lord! I'm sure I'm not the only person who read that and thought "That can't be right".

But it pretty much is - Latvia (or, to be precise, the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia) had a Caribbean colony for about thirty years in the seventeenth century. It had a small possession in West Africa as well.

The early colonial history of Tobago is one of strong resitance from the Caribs and numerous abortive attempts of European powers to gain a foothold on the island.

Qi is that for a time the island was divided between the Courlanders (Latvians) and the Dutch.

Today Great Courland Bay and Little Courland Bay are testament to an interesting past.
