Samoa is reverting to its original timeline west of the International Dateline. It is only the former Western Samoa as US Samoa is not changing.

There will be no 30th December 2011. The change will align with neighbouring Tonga and to make trading with New Zealand and Australia easier.

119 years ago all of Samoa moved its timeline east of the International Dateline to facilitate the then important trade with the US West Coast. The islanders celebrated two July 4ths.

Samoa seems to like change. On the 7th September 2009 the country changed from driving on the right to the left.

Samoa is making itself ready for the big time change. However not everyone has totally grasped the situation.

Travel agents are ready to exploit the fact that the neighbouring American Samoa (which drives on the right) will remain on the other side of the international date line. It will be possible to celebrate your birthday twice by travelling only 60 km.

Samoa is trying to encourage its rugby exiles to play for their native country rather than New Zealand.

Perhaps it should also encourage Monica Galetti - Michel Roux Jr's right hand woman - to identify as a Samoan. Born there, but seems to identify as a New Zealander.

On 'Food and Drink' last night she referred to her Samoan roots quite a lot.
