I just watched the QI compilation broadcast on BBC1 on Monday 25th April.

I don't agree that the 'rule' is "I before E, except after C". I learnt the full version as:

"I before E except after C ... when the sound is EE".

I have no plans to search the list of 900+ exceptions to the short version to see if they comply with this longer version :)

Guess it depends how you pronounce 'ceiling' :-O

Ceiling follows the rule though - i before e except after c when the sound is ee. In ceiling, there is a c and the sound is ee.

Have you tried telling that to Lee Mack though? :)

We had a discussion about that so-called "rule" of spelling when the topic first aired on the show; it is the main topic of a thread which begins at post 767810.

That thread is notable as being one of rather few on which Jenny and I have taken opposed positions!

"I before E except after C ... when the sound is EE". Or when sounding like hey, such as Neighbour or Weigh.

That still means that the sovereign's heirs are weird.

If it's a rule it's probably wrong
If it's a widely known rule it's even more likely to be wrong
If everyone knows it's right - it's definitely wrong
