Ooh, I think that's harsh. By all accounts there is a lot of natural beauty to the land, ancient palaces and architecture, and the last couple of weeks of March sounds like fun because the whol country gets an 8 day holiday :)

Eurovision is one of the most-watched competitions in the world, with audience figures estimated as high as 600 million. Superbowl 2010 by comparison, was watched by just 93 million viewers.

I .... just ...... despair

I have just been reviewing the latest Azerbaijani Tourism Promotional Video, and it is terrible, in so many ways:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4cZXVKV7Zk

This did not present Azerbaijan as a place I would wish to visit. The music was all the same throughout. The faded font was illegible: I laughed aloud when I read ‘At the continence of East and West’, followed by ‘Head in clouds, Feet in water’.

The snow globe was pretty, but when it opened into a map, it revolved and I felt lost again, unsure where the country was.

Anyway, I gather they are now hard at work on making a new improved version...

Allegedly, Sasha Baron Cohen wanted Borat to come from Azerbaijan, but he was dissuaded by his producer who said "No one will know where that is". How right he was...

I bloody hope so. That is terribly off-putting. Music is crap, font indeed very difficult to read, and I get sick and tired of seeing happy very photogenic youngsters clearly pretending to have an interest and a good time. So far (even despite winning the contest) only 70 hits. That won't improve through word of mouth.

That might not be the best video, but it was "At the confluence of East and West" :)

...but it does use an ugly fading font which makes such a Youlgreave very easy to do...

Another video about Azerbaijan which I discovered, with a wondrous 50 views on Utube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDS_9N-lZDA&feature=related

Worst traffic in the world? A car deparking and driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic? If the oil wealth is due to run out in the next 20 years, Azerbaijan appears to be a country of the elite grabbing luxuries and building palaces for their own private parties. If they are serious about creating a tourism industry – then they need to re-allocate the oilmoney to ecological rescue.

Blimey, I don't really know enough about Azerbaijan to want to stand up for it, but putting the country's name into Youtube produces several other much better videos, with thousands of views, so I think we need to be fair to them.

I must admit though, the comments between Azeris, Turks and Armenians slagging each other off under some of these videos is hilarious.
