What do the experts say about wearing one to sleep in?

They don't have an especially strong opinion on the matter. Some women find it more comfortable to wear a bra in bed, but unless that's the case for you then don't. It used to be claimed that wearing a bra in bed helped to maintain firmness, but this argument is no longer accepted; if anything, not wearing a bra in bed is probably preferable from this point of view.

If you do wear a bra to bed, most of the advice suggests that it should be as loose as possible, and that it should not be underwired.

Personally I think I'd find it rather uncomfortable to wear a bra to bed - but then I sleep naked, and would feel the same about any other item of clothing.

I guess it depends on volume of boobage. I've had clients who were so gynormous they would lie on one boob, so they would wake up from the pain that caused. A cotton loosefitting bra make life much easier.

Speaking as a former breastfeeding counsellor, my advice to women who are lactating was never to wear a bra in bed. In my experience it was a major cause of mastitis because bras are essentially not designed to be worn lying down and the firm edge of material pressing at the wrong angle across a lactating milk duct would tend to cause blockages preventing milk from draining properly, which would lead to swelling that then causes inflammation in the milk duct. In fact, badly-fitting bras in themselves are a big cause of mastitis for women who are breastfeeding. It's easily treatable, but not very pleasant, especially if you are taking care of a tiny infant at the same time.

And I thought it was djgordy, and Suzie Dent came in; thus the injunction

But seriously folks, I have learned a lot from this thread, some of which may come in useful for a half-birthday prezzie for my Better Half

I think that 'flowing over' is probably what we are trying to avoid.

When men buy bras for their ladies, it tends to be the overflowing/revealing kind that they choose*. With black and red as the rather predictable colours.

* Hence the après-Christmas avalange of Unwanted Item offers on eBay.

Many thanks to all for their guidance and info.
A visit was made today to M&S in Tunbridge Wells for a measuring appointment. And a selection of items were purchased which make my Better Half much happier.

Hurrah! Without going into numbers, had she been wearing the wrong size hitherto?
