Hi everyone
I am reading the "noticeably stouter book of general ignorance" and it is of course fascinating. However I found one statement very difficult to beleive - that "eating more than a kilogram (2.2lbs) of potatoes in a single sitting would be certain death" WOW!! (Potatoes belong to the Solanaceae (deadly nightshade) and therefore contain nicotine which is poisonous)

I assume that this must be raw potatoes? Surely cooking the potatoes would denature the nicotine molecule?

Any comments?

Thanks

Andy

Wikipedia has a slightly different view. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato#Toxicity

Seems that spuds dont have much nicotine in them (but other Solanaceae do, tobaco being one), the toxins are glycoalkaloids. And that to denature the toxin temperatures of over 170 centigrade are required (thats a wee bit more than boiled or mash)

A single potato can kill you.

You'd need to have it thrown at you pretty hard, though.

A rather intriguing way of looking at the provision of healthy food...

The poison is found throughout the plant, but especially in green potatoes and new sprouts. Never eat potatoes that are spoiled or green below the skin. Always throw away the sprouts.

Potatoes that are not green and have had any sprouts removed are safe to eat.

I heartily endorse the advice to throw away the sprouts...........and the broccoli as well.

most things can kill you from overconsumption, toxic or not... even milk contains things that will kill you in large doses, for most of them including milk you do however have to consume such and humongous amount that it's more or less impossible. especially since you have to do it faster than your body can get rid of it.

You can die of excessive water consumption as well. And I don't mean drowning.

Golly, I remember the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest that's listed on that wiki page. Ridiculous.
