I noticed 'Our Steve' said that an octopus has 8 legs - they are not legs they are tentacles ... I know I'm being pendantic.

Hmmm...pedantic maybe, but possibly useful as a General Ignorance question?

Thanks, Cleverina.

I'm sure he said 'arms'

Did he, samivel?

I can't remember. We need Flash with his marvellous bag of transcripts. Problem is, the elves can't keep pace with the site, so we don't always see complaints or corrections.

Especially as certain people keep posting queries and criticisms in the wrong place because they haven't read the instructions.

Since there aren't ten of them why aren't they called 'eightacles', or 'octacles'?

On the same thread, I don't know if this is just a myth but aren't humans something like 70% banana? It's a fact touted out at my school every "jeans for genes" day.

Did somebody call?

Samivel is right; he said 'arms'. And, interestingly enough, that seems to be correct. The wiki entry for 'tentacles' says:
Quote:
Tentacles are longer than arms and usually have suckers at their tips only. Squids and cuttlefish have eight arms like octopuses, and also two tentacles, which is one good way to distinguish squids from octopuses.

and gives this picture of a cuttlefish with 8 arms and 2 tentacles:
