| Well, the internal combustion engine must have come first, assuming that the petrol-powered internal combustion engine was developed to utilize petrol once that had been invented/made/discovered/whatever. |

But thats not petrol, is it?
If we are concerned only with the modern spark ignition internal combustion engine fuel "Petrol" then I might suggest that it has been around much longer than the petrol, or even any engine but with a different, or even no name.
