One of the main things I found to be of interest in this week's show was the stuff about the spelling of "hiccup" because I always thought it was spelt... well, like how I've spelt it just now.

See a thread beginning at post 577812 for more on the spelling of this word.

I've always spelt it "hiccup" too - "hiccough" I'd pronounce as "hick-coff", as it looks.

How would it look if it looked as if it rhymed with through or though or bough or enough?

Lol what I meant was, it has "cough" in it, so I pronounce that bit as I would the word "cough", because that's how it looks ;).

I thought that was what you meant - was just poking fun at the vagaries of the English language :-)

Hope you wear safety equipment, you could have someone's eye out poking.

I was a little disappointed there was no mention of the ultimate cure for hiccups which I'd written about, where a man accidentally shot his nephew dead, then turned the gun on himself.

I've now been converted to spelling it as "hiccup".

I thought that you could have an operation to stop hiccups as well as having digital rectal massage?

Excellent episode, and in my opinion, it's been one of the best of the series.

'twas quite silly, but also quite interesting.

You can; in fact there is more than one surgical procedure which has been used to that end.

But if you suddenly have an attack of hiccups while sat at your desk, it's probably not going to be practical to perform that surgery immediately. In fact, it seems only to be performed when a person has been hiccuping constantly for a year or more.

I don't know if it's ever been tried, but I reckon that using a bellows to introduce tobacco smoke to the rectum might work ...

Well they say that scaring someone is an effective remedy and I would expect most people would fear such an attempt!

I assume that this is right: is the story currently linked to in the "Quite Interesting News" section about outer body experiences the same study that QI couldn't get the scoop on in this episode? It seems to be lead by the same guy, Dr. Sam Parnia at the University of Southampton.
