Caricatures

Are they art?
Have they dignity?
Are they a joke?

In reverse, and attending to their not-drawn sense, is it possible to joke without them?

Surely a joke that is just a pun doesn't depend on caricatures, whether verbal or drawn, does it?

I think caricatures are interesting because they tell us so much about what people at the time they were drawn (if they are caricatures of contemporary people) think of the subject. Political cartooning is a form of caricature, isn't it? But we can think of people like Gilray in the past.

Infact, a pun seems to function without caricaturization. I still belive it's an - at least implied - reasoning in most humor.

That's a most interesting question... I could have made it the title of the thread, with two C's intead of one:

Caricature and Cartoon are the same thing?

As a lay person, I think of a caricature as being a portrait of someone in which his/her features are exaggerated in an almost grotesque fashion.
A cartoon, to my mind, is more of a comedic scene rather than a portrait.

Being somewhat broad concepts (specially cartoon), I think they're mostly those you said: onde more personal, other more contextual.
