Ref.garrick's post 5070:

The first robbery since the introduction of the Euro happened on New Year's Day 2002 when two armed men took 90, 000 euros from a bank in Zamora, Spain.

LTCM was a huge issue, but these figures about the face value of their holdings can be very damn meaningless; eg, if I buy $1m of government bonds, and immediately sell the capital element of the bonds to one person for $900,000 and the interest element to another person for $105,000 spread over twelve months, what "outstanding contracts" do I have? $1m? $2m? $5,000? If I'm a trader I'll say $5,000. If I'm a headline writer for the Sunday Times I'll say $2 million. And LTCM's positions were a lot more multi-layered and complex than that.

Does that mean that if you pretend to snort cocaine from a used banknote, you might actually get something out of it?

Garrick, I must be one of the few people I know who is, in fact, totally virgin in the field of drugs other than alcohol! (Vergin' on the ridiculous, I know...)

This extracted from an email from Jason:

Quote:
Britain had coinage a thousand years before it had banking, but Mesopotamia had extensive banking a thousand years before it had coins

giro banking was invented by the ancient egyptians and was every bit as extensive and complex as it is today. They used corn as the currency – and it was based on quality rather than quantity –rather as if the French used wine as money

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the first known examples of writing (from Ur?) were a set of accounts. Can''t find a source
