In one of the previous series' (can't remember which!) we were told that some tiny place (compared with the other countries involved, I mean) was named in Britain's declaration of war for the kick off of WWII, but was not named in the peace agreement. Can anyone remember what the place was?
Would be very grateful if someone could produce the goods... thanks folks :) |

Comparably, there is some doubt as to whether Austria and San Marino have ever made peace following WWI - see post 392821. |

France encouraged Andorra to declare war on Germany on the outbreak of World War 1 and forgot to mention them in the peace treaty at Versailles? Technically Andorra was at war with Imperial Germany until 1957. |

Or so it has often been claimed (including, ahem, by me on these very forums).
In fact, Andorra and Germany made peace on 25 September 1939; Andorra was (officially) neutral in WWII, so it thought it was about time to end one conflict just as other countries began to get involved in another. Post 391853 refers. |

I love Andorra's motto 'Touch me if you Dare'
Now that, is bravado. |

San Marino declared itself neutral during WW1 and WW11.
The New York Times in error reported that the tiny state had declared war on Britain 0n 17th September 1940. |

See also "the mouse that roared".
Many of these claims are interesting, but in strictly legal terms some fail scrutiny. For example any member of the EU automatically "declares end of war" with all other member states the day they sign the treaty (because it's written therein that no member state is at war with any other member state). In theory they also abandon all territorial claims on land within the borders of another member state because in signing the treaty they accept the borders as currently defined, although Spain seems to have forgotten this bit.
Whether Berwick on Tweed is part of the UK for Treaty of Rome purposes is a matter of debate. The general consensus is that it is for two reasons:
1. There are no clearly-defined and internationally-recognised borders for the territory of "Berwick-on-Tweed"
2. Berwick-on-Tweed has happily enjoyed the benefits and privileges of EU membership from the time the UK joined, and VAT has been collected within those borders. SO it's a part of the EU by a principle similar to Adverse Possession.
