In Oklaoma there is a place called Beavers Bend

Pennsylvania has a Beaver Valley

The newspaper of the LSE students Union is The Beaver

The village where I grew up translates into Beavertown because of the beavers that used to live there and accordingly has a beaver as its crest.

Having just been reminded of the existence of this thread, it occurred to me to wonder just why the word beaver is used to refer to the female genitalia.

Most dictionaries note that beaver was earlier used to refer to a man's beard, and thus suggest that it's all to do with the presence of hair. But an increasing number of women prefer to do without the hair, so if it's that the slang term should logically fall out of use.

Playboy once claimed - apparently seriously, although it's impossible to be certain - that this is not the true explanation. Supposedly, trappers stuck in log cabins for weeks on end used beaver pelts as aids to self-stimulation - and so the slang term is more literal than we ever knew. Plausible I suppose, but there's no real evidence.

If you ask me, these explanations are both wrong. The term beaver is used for the female genitalia because beavers eat wood ...

There is a postulation which I first heard on The Layover with Anthony Bourdain a few weeks ago during his Philadelphia layover when he did the Grim Philly tour (offbeat historical tour) - that the reason for that particular euphemism was that the merkins that prostitutes of the day wore were made of beaver pelt.

Alas the only references I can find to support that theory are all put forth by Philadelphian historians - so they probably link back to the Grim Philly tour folks.

There is a Scottish Wild Beaver Group, the activities of which I leave to the imagination.

Reports of two recent attacks by Beavers in Eastern Europe have resulted in one fatality in Belarus and a man escaping serious injury in Russia.

And a beaver pencil sharpener. I don't think they're meant to be rude, but that phrase is enough to make many men cross their legs, I should magine.

Beaver has been sighted in the River Otter in Devon. This is the first wild beaver reported in England for many years. It is apparently illegal to release beaver in England.
