An example of an island which could have significant economic value which is disputed. It is in the Mozambique Channel, mid-way between Madagascar and the Mozambique Coast.

The uninhabited atoll became a French possession in 1897 and was placed under the administration of a Réunion in 1968.

Sovereignty is in dispute especially if oil is found in the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Madagascar continues to claim sovereignty over the atoll and surrounding islands including neighbouring Europa Island which is garrisoned by French forces.

I used to work with the man who studied the shipwreck that came adrift on this atoll (I think the atoll was named after the ship?). We even had some of the artefacts in our museum.

BAIXO DA JUDIA (Shoal of Judia) named after a Portuguese ship that ran aground, was the original name for this atoll. It got its present name from a cartographer's error. The atoll is a graveyard of wrecked ships with an estimated 100 vessels scattered around the territory.

Heavily protected by the French navy, it is submerged at high tide.
