Just watched episode 3 of series 8. Is David Mitchell angling for a knighthood, or is he the current sycophant laureate.
When the question was put "Who was the most famous person beaten by a machine at chess", David's answer was "As the Queen is the most famous person in the world !!!" What a ridiculous anglocenric statement.

I suggest that it was meant to be ridiculous.

I don't know so much - I think the Queen probably is the most famous living person in the world. I can think only of Barack Obama as a potentially more famous person - and I don't know that everyone in, say, India knows who Barack Obama is.

So, who gets the biggest pay-packet?
For example: the President of Ireland gets more than the President of the USA.

HM would certainly be in the running for most recognisable person in the world. Many people will have heard of others, but their images will not have been so ubiquitous, nor so enduring.

The Queen is the Head of State for sixteen countries, totalling 134 million people. She is Head of the Commonwealth, totalling about 2 billion people. It's probably safe to say most, if not all, of those people have heard of her.

What's more, she's been in that position since 1952. I can't really think of anyone else who has had a greater public profile and that kind of longevity.

Probably his holiness the Pope may stake a rival claim.

Only as a position, though, not as an individual. I doubt many people could name the man.

Alan suggested Jesus. Does this mean that he's angling for a job as God's right hand man?

The Pope looks and sounds more like Smallhausen from 'Allo Allo.

*YAWN* Can we leave the pope/ nazi thing already? The man is not and never has been a nazi, for FUCK's sake! It's getting boring! Membership of the Hitler Youth was compulsory at the time, I repeat, COMPULSORY! I have no vested interest in defending the man, but this is ridiculous! There are about six million good, valid reasons to bitch about the pope as an institution, and probably a couple of decent ones to bitch about Josef Ratzinger as the person currently holding that office (though, I suspect, not a lot, given that most of the things he says are simply him doing his job, hence go back to the pope as in institution), but the Hitler Youth membership is not one of them. Please, please use sharp weapons in that debate, not shite like that!

Actually, membership of the Nazi party was compulsory to be a member of the Hitler Youth.

Therefore, he was a Nazi, if only technically.

Also, he was quite happy to compare aetheism to the Nazis in his recent speech. I'd say that makes him fair game for such humour.
