I just caught the first G episode repeated on Dave. Never saw that one before; we must have missed it when it was shown on BBC.

Anyway, what I want to know is, who was the fifth contestant and why was he there? The rather soft-spoken American chap with a kazoo for a buzzer.

Colin and I were expecting him to be introduced sooner or later as an expert in something, or someone who had done something related to one of the questions. But no, he just sat there and occasionally contributed to the discussions with no explanation whatever.

So... why? Why squeeze in a fifth contestant?

Thanks for the name, which I'd completely forgotten, but WHY?

He is the guy pushing BBC America to show QI in the states.

As I understand it, the guys had been keen to get Mr Hodgman on the show for a while - and for the only date for which he was available, there was already a full panel organized. So they had him as an extra person.

He was also already in London that week for an episode of The Museum of Curiosity.

Perhaps our American friends can answer this question, what does Mr Hodgman do in the USA? I have to admit that I do not appear to have come across him before or if I have it has slipped my memory.

He has appeared regularly on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a special correspondent since 2005. He was also the PC in the "Get a Mac" ads that ran for a few years.
