The 1001 Nights is the famous tale of Scheherazade, who survives impending execution by telling stories to her king.

The Stories were originally translated to English in 1885 by Richard Francis Burton, and the complete translation occupied 10 volumes.

However.... how many stories or characters from Scheherazade stories can you name?

Sinbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba are the only ones I know, but they could very well not have been in the original.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

G'day bgkdavis, welcome.

I think zomgmouse has covered the ones I know. There were those forty thieves, too.

Sindbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba sound a bit too klaxony to me.

Harun ar-Raschid is one of several historical characters to feature.
Likewise some religious legends and personage is picked up on (King Solomon).

You get THREE Klaxons for Sinbad, Ali Baba AND Aladdin, none of these are Stories, characters or derivatives of the stories attributed to Scheherazade in the 1001 nights

I thought so. It seems they were indeed folk tales, but not actually stories in the 1001 Nights.

Exactly those charcters and stories feature in the Supplemental Nights, 6 additional volumes of arabic tales that were later added to the 1001 Nights, these are also known as the Calcutta nights or the Breslau nights

Also (and Ive had to look this up) the tales of Harun ar-Raschid are not 1001 night stories either, again these features in the supplemental volumes, but that one is not really worthy of a klaxon.

BTW I apologise... whilst looking up Harun ar-Rachid I found that Sinbad actually is a 1001 nights character, he features in volume 6 of the 1001 nights occupying the stories told on nights 537 through to 566, so you actually only get 2 Klaxons for Aladdin and Alli Baba

That's interesting, because Wikipedia claims the Sinbad cycle wasn't part of the original Arabic version.

arrgh... the more I read into this the more interesting the Sinbad issue gets

Apparently I now understand that Sinbad does feature in Burton's original translation, but not in Arabic original, Burton himself added the Sinbad stories!.

I have always liked 'The Historic Fart'.

That's no way to talk about me on a public forum.

I do apologise, Mike ;-)

I like the Nights, it's the one book I always carry with me when I'm travelling. Shortly before I left England, a friend, without knowing this, gave me a copy of a collection of Burton's translation of the tales. I already had the Dawood translation so that was me very happy, two loads of tales to read.

It's been years since I thought about 1001 nights, but I'm as confused as everyone else about who was in it as well.

I do remember there were several animal stories, and genies also appear, the rest is forotten :)
