In 1978 unemployed scaffolder Charles Arthur Bickford broke into a house in Birmingham. He threatened the own, Mrs Meriweather witn indecent assault unless she gave him 20 cash.

However, Mrs Meriweather did not have any cash on her, so Bickford told her to write out a cheque to him. This is where he made his mistake.

As Mrs Meriweather was making out the cheque, she asked Bickford whom she should make out the cheque to, to which he said "Charles A. Bickford" thus giving away his identity.

He later attempted to rob a store but during his getaway his trousers fell down.
