We had 5 sightings of kingfishers today. We saw 2 together so the five sightings may have been of the same 2 birds. On a beautiful and quiet stretch of river between Merthyr Mawr and Ogmore.

Only place I've ever seen kingfishers was on the Nile, those ones aren't blue either.

He's handsome.
Up until last year I can't remember seeing any in the UK. I had only seen them on the Dalyan river in Turkey.

They're fascinating birds. I used to work in a factory that was on the bank of the Colne Brook in Wraysbury. We'd all stop work and sneak out to take a look everytime the goods-in/stores staff spotted a kingfisher on one of the trees overlooking the river out back.

And they catch fire.

Many years ago, I used to watch a pair that were nesting by and fishing our moat one summer. Fascinating creatures.

Moat? Moat? Are you King Posital, or Sir Posital, the QI Knight?

Or an MP?

lol - You may all rise...

It was an old 16c hundred house (IIRC) - the moat was mostly silted up (as we couldn't get clearing paid for on expenses ;-) but part of it was still a pond - with a row boat.

The main house was seriously haunted, so I would spend as much time in the grounds or the town as possible (avoiding the outhouses)... not that I believe in ghosts or anything.

I should have got a medal for living in that place...
