A hot cup of tea. My husband thinks I'm mad...

<shut up at the back there>

...but even on hot days I'd rather drink my tea hot than iced.

Hot drinks cool you down more than cold drinks.

Well, that's what some meme on Facebook told me. I see no reason to doubt or check :P

So - drinking a hot liquid on a cold day is a bad idea?

So mountain rescue teams are wrong to give you warm drinks if you're suffering from hyperthermia?

Sure, why not.

A quick Google suggests that hot drinks cool you down because they make you sweat more, so, provided that sweat can evaporate, you cool down better, and too much cold drink can warm you up by causing your blood vessels to constrict.

I found a big carton of Um Bongo in Tesco last week. Sweet, delicious nostalgia. :-) the lyrics to the song on the advert are printed on the side of the carton.

Ah, I see. A warm drink for a hyperthermia sufferer is unlikely to cool them down because they're likely to be well wrapped up, and therefore the sweat is unable to evaporate.

Phew. Thank God the mountain rescue are getting it right.

Its not that exciting because I wasn't even close to having a problem over it but I haven't drank any alcohol since the 29th of August and that was only a pint. I haven't given up just cut back, will drink only on special occasions.

Well done Jivvi. After my son missed his flight to the US from Frankfurt and missed out on his holiday with us because he went to sleep at the airport after drinking beer, he's also sworn off for most purposes. He said he realised that every time he'd really screwed something up, alcohol had been involved.
