There are 12 countries in the world without income tax.

These are Andorra, the Bahamas, Brunei, Bahrain, Kuwait, the Maldives, Monaco, Nauru, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Vanuatu.

New Hampshire (Maine's nearest neighbour as a state) has soaringly high property taxes though.

Income tax in the UK was abolished in 1802 and subsequently reintroduced in 1803, both by Henry Addington, as a result of a cessation, then re-escalation, of hostilities with Napoleon.

In a fantastic example of historic spin-doctoring, upon it's re-introduction it was not referred to specifically as an income tax, but as a ‘contribution of the profits arising from property, professions, trades and offices’.

Another myth bites the dust thanks to Neo.

At school, we were told that Income Tax was introduced during WW1 as a 'temporary wartime measure'.

It was abolished again in 1813, and then reintroduced once again by the Income Tax Act 1842. Britain has had it ever since then.

But here's the odd bit. nitwit, I imagine that you went to school in Orpington or thereabouts. However, if you went back to school now and were told that income tax was introduced during WW1 as a supposedly temporary wartime measure, then your teacher would be absolutely right - Canada didn't have it until 1917.
