Big flashing screens and hooters to you all. In the last programme Mr Fry suggested Berwick was at war with Russia until 1966. Not so! He was correct in saying that Berwick was listed as a seperate state at the declaration of war, but you all forgot about the Window Tax! Quite boringly, during the Crimean war, this tax was imposed and a clause within the Act stated that Berwick-upon-Tweed would from hereon be included within Great Britain. The Window Tax was repealed after a year, but the bureaucrats remembered the clause with Berwick in it and a new Act was made of this clause. So when the war ended, Berwick was included in the peace treaty as part of GB. This does not stop us telling this great urban myth to American tourists. Incidentally, a cannon captured at Crimea stands proudly on the town walls overlooking the estuary, so if those pesky Ruskies come over - we're ready for them!

Yes, Jim, thanks for that. Can you point us at a source which gives any more detail?

I just need to add the words 'retractions special' here so that I can find this post through the search function.
