Surely you mean:

"CynicCure, I'm afraid that these forums spend longer than IS strictly necessary criticising the grammar and syntax of THE posts made to them!"

Also, as "CynicCure" is clearly a screename rather than a proper name, should it not be presented in inverted commas?

No. While on these forums, CynicCure is that person's name as surely as Sadurian Mike is yours. It's probably not his (/her) real name, but it's a name by which he (/she) has been known.

Would you insist that, since it's not his real name, we should refer to "David Bowie" if ever he comes up in the discussions?

No, I think we should stick to "The living God and all-round ace song-meister" to keep it brief.

As long as you don't leave them dangling.

Yes.

;o)

Although, is a nickname, stage name and screenname the same? After all, we do (or technically should) use inverted commas for the likes of "Fats" Domino, even though that was his stage name and how he was known within the music world.

At what point does a pseudonym become a "real" name?

We never do though, do we? Yes, we might use the style Antoine "Fats" Domino once, but if you were posting about him in the "What are you listening to" thread, you probably wouldn't use the quotes.

After all, while political opponents do sometimes refer to the Chancellor of the Exchequer as "George" Osborne or as Gideon, the newspapers don't.

On the wider question, I'd say that a stage name and a screen name are almost exactly the same. Sadurian Mike isn't your real name, but it's how you choose to be known on these forums. It's not really any different from Carlos Estevez choosing to be known in his professional life as Charlie Sheen.

As for when a pseudonym becomes a real name, that only happens on the relatively few occasions that there is a legal name change. Unfortunately, Elton Hercules John is by now the legal name of the man originally called Reginald Dwight - so it is no longer a pseudonym. But such changes are relatively rare.

I haven't read all the posts, but just wanted to say I'm enjoying reading this book, however, I'm a bit shocked at the number of typos. I hope that any new books in this series or reprint of this book go through a more thorough editing process. It doesn't appear to have gone through any editing process. It is very sloppy I hope the facts have been checked more thoroughly.

Since Elvis is not given a mention in "The Book of the Dead" (Chapter 9 would have been the place, I'd have thought), does that mean he isn't...sssh, you know what?

You've obviously never read the Armageddon series by Robert Rankin, in which it's revealed that Elvis has faked his death, and with the aid of a time travelling Brussel Sprout called Barry, is rewriting the Bible.

Read it years ago...(and most of his other books too). Can't say I have ever been a fan of sprouts though. When I am next in the Flying Swan, I'll ask Jim and John if they've seen Elvis lately. Watch this space!

I must admit I always thought Typos was the small and desolate greek island where trainee gods were sent if they failed their magic exams due to bad spelling.
