This post was prompted by the death last week of C P Ellis, former Grand Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan in Durham, North Carolina, and the publication of a book detailing his conversion to civil rights activist in the early 1970s and subsequent friendship with Ann Atwater, a militant black community organizer.

To Ellis, civil rights legislation seemed part of a plot by blacks and Communists who were, in the words of the Ku Klux Klan, "bent on destroying the white race through economic oppression and intermarriage." He and Atwater became the co-chairs of a school desegregation group. He was put up to disrupt proceedings, but slowly realised that the problems of poor Southern white people were not the fault of the blacks. Blacks in Durham had no money or power. He realised that if any group was holding poor whites down, it was the wealthy white factory owners and businessmen - the same men who had been meeting behind the scenes with him for years, slipping him a few dollars 'for the cause' and telling him what a great job he was doing.

Ellis and Atwater went from hating each other to realising they had a common cause, and developing an enduring friendship. The truth didn't exactly set him free. He became an outcast and tried to commit suicide. However, he persevered, studied and got his high school diploma and became a successful union organizer, and eventually achieved a measure of peace with his life.

Review of a book about the two of them here.

No wonder he never got past Grand Cyclops of the Den with that attitude. You can buy KKK merchandise off their website.

Their supreme official is called the Grand Wizard of the Empire and he is assisted by ten Genii. Other principal officials of the Klan are the Grand Dragon of the Realm, assisted by eight Hydras; the Grand Titan of the Dominion, assisted by six Furies; and the Grand Cyclops of the Den, assisted by two Nighthawks.
