Martian hunting on Horsell Common...

Quote:
But very early in the morning poor Ogilvy, who had seen the shooting star and who was persuaded that a meteorite lay somewhere on the common between Horsell, Ottershaw, and Woking, rose early with the idea of finding it. Find it he did, soon after dawn, and not far from the sand pits. An enormous hole had been made by the impact of the projectile, and the sand and gravel had been flung violently in every direction over the heath, forming heaps visible a mile and a half away. The heather was on fire eastward, and a thin blue smoke rose against the dawn.

Quote:
Then came the night of the first falling star. It was seen early in the morning, rushing over Winchester eastward, a line of flame high in the atmosphere. Hundreds must have seen it, and taken it for an ordinary falling star.

...or a plane.

Petrified martian tentacles at the edge of the pit?

Didn't find any martians. Unless martians look like dogs. Sat on the bench by the pond, ate my sandwiches, all the while fending off attacks from hungry martians... errr... dogs, drank my tea and enjoyed the silence.

I tried to avoid getting people in the photos I took, but it was difficult because of all the dog walkers. Most of the chapter that takes place on Horsell Common is set early in the morning so I'd like to go back just as the sun is rising and the place is empty. It would be a lot more atmospheric, much more in keeping with the feel of the book.

A fine day all round.

Lovely photo TheAlex! Did you use any colour filters or is that just how it was?

Welcome to QI by the way :-)

A few more local pics, all taken on my phone on the way to work, most of which would make you think that Staines isn't that bad a place to live...

Early morning mist on the sports field at the end of my road.

Farmer's field, with a reflective sky, just to the north of the previous photo, a day or two later.

Same field just before dawn, the day after the previous photo.
link to larger version so you can see the mist "piling up" in the far corner

My attempt at a Norwegian black metal album cover. It's actually just up the road from Staines station.

Is it the martians again? A shooting star? Nope, it's Superman.

Dog Day Sunrise. An impulse shot, taken as I was approaching Feltham on the train. I think it sums up my journey to work. It's not an unpleasant journey, but I tend to be a bit hazy and out of focus myself at that time of day.

Your album cover is very atmospheric, Bondee. The sort of place where it's dead quiet, and the sudden snapping sound of a twig makes you kinda nervous.

Have finally got round to the idea that downloading pictures off my camera and saving them is a Good Thing.

Ahh, cute furry coos! Beautiful compositions, Starfish. Love that backdrop of Eilean Donan.
