Here is an article in The Independent about the king of Tonga no longer being an absolute monarch.

"Tonga is the Pacific's only remaining monarchy."

What would the Queen of Australia, the Queen of New Zealand, the Queen of Papua New Guinea etc and the Emperor of Japan think of that?

One of Flanders and Swann's 'Songs for our time.'

Both: Oh, it's hard to say...
Flanders: "Oly-ma-kitty-luca-chi-chi-chi"
Both: But in Tonga, that means... "No"!

If I ever have the money,
'Tis to Tonga I shall go.
For each lovely Tongan maiden there,
Will gladly make a date.

And by the time she's said:
Flanders: "Oly-ma-kitty-luca-chi-chi-chi",
Both: It is usually too late!

In 1971, barges loaded with sand arrived at Minerva Reef off Tonga from Australia, bringing the reef level above the water and allowing construction of a small tower and flag. The Republic of Minerva issued a declaration of independence on 19 January 1972, in letters to neighboring countries and even created their own currency. It was financed by American businessmen.

On February 1972, Morris C. Davis was "elected" as Provisional President of the Republic of Minerva. Military personnel were dispatched to enforce the Tonganís claim which was recognized by the South Pacific Forum in September 1972. The Americans withdrew.

In 1982 the Americans again tried to take possession of the Reef and were thwarted by the Tongans.

Tongan sovereignty of the reef is disputed by Fiji.
